Deichkind Concert - Bremen

On Saturday I went to Bremen with some friends for a pretty crazy concert. It was pretty awsome, we were seven girls and two guy, so I had to look out for the ladies! We took a train from Ocholt, a small town a few miles from where I live, to Bremen. On the weekends the trains dont drive all the time like weekdays so our options were pretty limited and we took one that got us there at about 7:00pm, with enough time to get a hamberger and check out the a little from the christmas market. It is one of the many christmas markets poping up all over germany.

After our quick hamberger stop, we took a bus to the concert. We rode on a pretty big bus, with about 120 seats, but there were about 200 people on it! Its a completly diffrent look into the youth of germany when 200 excited people are in an extremly small area! That wasent really all that bad, the worst part I think was the entrance to the concert. We were about 4000 or 5000 people waiting for opening, and as soon as it opened it because pretty crazy. The people were packed in so tight, I could jump in the air and stay there because the pressure of the people around me would hold me up!

After the crazy entrance nonsense it was pretty awsome. The band came on at about 10:45pm and played untill 12:30am. They are a pretty crazy group, the play hip-hop/techno music. They all were waring trashbags with fluorescent colored tape and paint all over. And between trampolines, bungee ropes, and croud surfing in inflatable rafts it mad for a pretty intresting evening.

After the concert began an intresting jurny. We ended up not being able to find a taxi because we were to many people, and the 5000 other people also wanted taxis. So we ended up walking across Bremen at 3:00 in the morning. It was not very eventfun, but everwhere were party because of the soccer game in bremen that night. But the people you run into on the steets at 3:00am are pretty cool, and just happy that their team won a soccer game.

After walking though Bremen, we ended up waiting at the train station untill 6:00am for the next train home. But it wasnt to bad, we got a chance to sleep alittle, and watch the soccer game. It was pretty crazy evening, and I was home just intime for breakfast!

Thanksgiving

This weekend was pretty fun! In germany they dont have our thanksgiving, but my host mother thought it would be cool to make a thanks giving dinner that we ate on sunday. I had a friend over that day too, so he got to experiance thanksgiving dinner aswell! We ate some hog, and pumkin pie! So I was pretty satisfied. It was a fun time, and enjoyed by all!

Also on saturday there was a piano even for the childen at the music school that I take lessons from, and the piano teacher is a friend of my mother and he asked me if I would come and make a video. So I spent saturday afternoon filming children playing piano for their parents. It was pretty crazy to see some 12 year old kids playing Bach and Beethoven. There is going to be another thing similar to the one on saturday later in the year, or the start of next that I will play in.

Ive been working at piano for about 6 weeks, and Fritz, my teacher, said that Im learning at a faster than normal rate, so thats pretty encouraging. Ive been pretty good at understanding the theory, and Im getting my plaing skills tuned in now. About two weeks ago I found a friend with a keyboard collecting dust, that I took off her hands and Ive been practice almost every day. It pretty fun.

Life

After the week in Latland, and the few days in Byern, I started really geeting in to the flow of things. Ive been pretty busy with what does not seem to be a whole lot of anything now that I look at it! I go to school everyday, and after school I end up with a good chuck of homework. On the weekends I try to keep my self intertained with partys, going bowling, playing cards with friends and things of that nature.

Last weekend was Holloween, but here the people know about it but they dont really do anything. The kids from the town where I live did a walk around the town with laturns with the fire department and what not. I was told the they do this ever year and that it hast nothing to do with Holloween and it just happend to be on the same day this year.

I wrote my first class test last week, and that was pretty tricky. The concept is pretty straight forward, we get an tast to write about and we write. Its the same idea in every class, writing in math class I can try and kindof get my ideas across. Last week we had one in German, and I got pretty much no where on that one because we had to read a text and analyze it, wich is alittle over my level at this point.

Life goes on, and Im still enjoing it!

Bayern (Bavaria)

Because the schools in Germany have a shot summer break they have longer breaks during the year, like fall break! So directly following the exchange program with Latvia was the start of fall break, which is two weeks long.
During the first few days of fall break my family and I drove by autobahn to Bayern (or Bavaria in English). The Autobahn(Highway) was the real start to the adventure, I had only been on the Autobahn once or twice before and for only a short time. We left at 05.00am so we could avoid traffic, and we did exactly that! In the no speed limit zone we were able to hold about 200KmH(about 125mph), and we were mostly in the slow lane. It was pretty fun.
Bayern has a beautiful landscape, and it was really cool to see. We were in the Bavarian Forest in a condo type thing. Im not really sure all that we did, we tryed to see alot of things in only four days, I ate some strage food, saw some historic churches and buidings and also a castel city. so I took alot of pictures of the old citys and historic things. We spent a day at a glass factory I guess you could call it. I got a chance to blow some glass, and buy some cool things, like a beer boot! It was really cool to watch the people work with glass also, there were people hand crafting things before my eyes. We also went caving one morning which was also fun.
Hopefully I can get a few pictures up soon.

Picture text

The fist picture is the Metal recycling company in Latvia.

The second and third are on the East sea coast in Latvia, the first of the two is of some of my classmates searching for "luck stones". a Luck Stone has a hole all the way through it, and they are pretty often there, I found one, but I dont know exaclty how they are created.

Fourth is a wall on the side of some apartment buildings or something, but it said "NOOB" so I thought it would make for a nice photo!

The fifth is in Riga, we were in a church over the city and it is a cool picture from over Riga.

Last is a waterfall, and I think it is the widest waterfall in all of europ, but I dont know exactly where in Latvia it is... but I was there!

Latvia

The last ten days I spent in Latvia. My class at school did a exchange program there, so the students we stayed with will come to Germany in April for about a week.

The trip was pretty evenful and I really enjoyed it, it was a real once in a life time thing. My class and I started out by taking the train from Westerstede(Home) to Keil: somewhere on the East Sea, then a 22 hour ship ride to Lituania then another two hours by bus to Leipaja, Latvia. Leipaja is about 12kilometers long and 5kilometers wide, and it sits inbetween a big lake. It has been part of the EU since 2004, and the people there have told me that that has only been a bad change, because the pay for work has been constant, but the prices of food and other things have been going up to keep up with EU standards. The population there is about 50% Russian and 50% Latvian. But they are no longer part of Russia so there are schools for only Russians and schools for only Latvians, and to get a good job you need to speak Latvian and have had gone to a Latvian school. My host Brother was trilingual (Russian, Latvian, and English).

So the real experance started on the ship, we had 22 hours by ship from Germany Lituani. It was a really cool alot of fun, and I got to know my classmates alot better, the most of the time we played cards and sat around and talked, but we also did some dancing and singing, sining in german is alittle hard but fun. When we got there the first real sight we saw from the bus was a group of shaks, maybe 50 or so, that were about the size of an american garden shed that seemd to be a naborhood. When we got there, it was better but still strange. Alot of 10 story apartment buildings that people lived in. - I think this is a good example of dont judge a book by its cover, because by the end of the week I had a great time.

The first day we had a shot presentation over Latvia and ist econemy and some stuff like that, after that it , Friday, was teachers day or something, but my host brother and I were ended up teaching 3ed grade kids math with some other exchange people. Was funny, mostly becaust at 8 they really dont speak much english and all communication was nonverbal or through translation of one of the older students. We made some crafts with the kids too. In the eveing we played some pool in a small "pub like" place.

On the second day we took a bus to Riga, the capital of Latvia. Riga has 40% of the population of latvia. We saw some museums and then wondered the city for awhile. We also got to go up in a church and take pictures from over the city.

On Sunday it was saved for a family day, but we all ended up at a paintball part in the city. This was the bestpaintball I have ever played. The paintball guns were not top of the line, but the games were amzing, both the German and Latvian class were playing, wich made it even more fun. The park was huge and that day we were the only ones there. We started with a basic game, they are there we are here go get them and hide behind random things, broken buildings tires what ever. Next we played VIP and we had to get our VIP to a point and aslong as they made it there we were ok. The second round of VIP I was the VIP, this is where it gets intresting. Cars, I was in a car with two other guys and the other team had another car too. My car got roadside bombed on the other side so the driver "died" and me and the other guy in the car had to defend me while in the car waiting for other people from my team to come and get me to the helicopter. -It was more than your avrage game of paintball, and it was great.

On Monday we saw the Olympic training center in the city, it was pretty impressive, but only a short tour. It was also pretty new, so alot of rooms were empty, but they had alot of big plans for it. Next we saw "Liepaja's Metalurgs", this is a huge steel recycling compay that makes mainly metal bars for construction and exports to over 20 countrys all over the world. It is also over 50% over Liepajas econemy. It was really cool, alot of fire, liquid metal flowing.

One The last two days we traveled around latvia to see the other stuff there, and worked on some projets to show our partents on the last evening.

I also note that since I was with the german kids every day and chatting I think fluently in German, and I am fogetting to think in English as time goes on.

Hopefully I can get a few pictures online soon.

Picture explanation

The first picture is at the north see. Last sunday my family drove up to the north see and looked at a harbor and such. Its water and not all that exciting, but I felt like I was ontop of the world as seen in the picture!

The second picture is the same day on the way to the north see we stoped at a small village to see how the some of the older Germans from back in the day lived. It was pretty intresting it see. The people used to be shorter, but now most people are tall so its really cool to sit in the short houses and stuff.

The thrid picture.... this was a fun night. My host brother are good friends with the girls there so we hung out on a friday night. I learned a game where you stick Oreos to your head and try to slide it to your mouth without toughing it, so I thought it would be cool to stick a gummy bear to my head because I didnt have any oreos. That turned into alot of fun but they are to sticky and just stuck to our heads. So left side of the picture is Kea (my dance partern) and in the blue is Corinna, a good friend of Kea.

This is a pitcure from my trip to Bremen, I dont know the stoy behind it, but it stands in the middle of todays market square in Bremen. It is said that if you rub its cool knee thing you will come back to that place. For me its a train ride, so Ill will most likely be back on a free saturday.

School

Last week school started and it has been keeping me pretty busy!

The school system here is very diffrent than school I am used to. It is better compaired to college. I have 29 classes in a week, 45mins each, and a total of 14 subjects. Some days I get to sleep in and some I get to leave early. Its alot more relaxed then High school in USA, but the home work and class work is much harder.
School is also very intresting, I can't say I always understand Bio, Chem, and Physics. I knowtice I am paying alot closer attetion when my teacher randomly lights things on fire, makes strange smokeing masses, and makes fire balls fly across the room. Its really great, and most classes are more like discussions with some related home work.
My class may also be making a 10 day exchange with Litvia that I will go along with. I think it will be another cool chance to see Europe. I am also going to start some Piano lessons tomorrow.

Theres alot going on and its keeping my busy, but I'm really loving it!

School Starting

Friday was the last day of OSK, language course, so we had a party with my class mates before we all parted ways to our parts of the country. I was an intresting party with our host paretns and siblings. Today every one is leaving Westerstade and so I am left alone with no Americans, which is awsome!

On monday Ill have my first day of school, and it looks like a have about 30 hours a week, but school is way diffrent here some it looks like I might not have school after 1:00pm three days a week. I also will have alot of classes, I have 6 hours of German a week, 3 English, Chemie, Biologie, Mathematik, Geschichte, sport, and some others I think.

I'm really looking forward to it, I have already been in the newspaper so alot of people know who I am. Most of the time when I explin that I am and American people brighten up and start talking to me, so its no problem to make friends!

Bremerhaven

Last week I decided to take dancing lessions, so I asked a girl if she would dance with me. So now I have some dancing set up with Kea, she is really cool and has the same birt day as me, and almost the same time too!

Today my class and various host brothers and sisters went by train to Bremen. First we went to Bremerhaven, which is the port in Bremen that avout 7million Germans left Germany from. Then we went into inner Breman and saw some old buildings and such. It was really cool and may places to shop at and walk around. Its really cool, and from where I live its an easy day trip, aswell as Hamburg.

Crazy Weekend

I have a list of things I want to talk about, so this might be unorganized, but at least I'll get my thoughts out!

On Thursday, Lennart and I went road bowling, its a common thing in this area, and it was pretty fun to play with the team, but I got hit with one of the balls when I wasent watching for the ball! its really huts to get hit with a bowling ball!

On Firday I had school again to lean German, but after school Lennart and I went to a 18 birthday party, its alot like a grad part in the USA, because here 18 is when you can drive, and be an adult. It was alot of fun, and I met alot of people that will be going to my school. I also enjoyed some of the drinks provided, seeing as the drinking age is 16 here.

I could not ask for a better host family! They are so nice! My host mom always cooks good food, does my laundry, and even irons my shorts, although Im not sure why. Lennart seems to know every one in Westerstade and shows me around and takes me to good partys. I don't understand my host father yeat, he speaks only german, but he is cool also, and he built the house we live in.

I have also decided to take dancing lession! Every one here has taken them, so it sounds like a good time and a chance to meet some new people too!

I miss every one, thanks for the e-mails and comments!

School

I started to go to Language school on Monday and its with eight other students from America, and we are studying grammer and things like that that might help us here. So after school we play cards and such.

Today we went to the Media Markt, which is like Best Buy, but much more awsome. I bought a Handy (Cell Phone) so now I am ready to call all the ladies! Lennart bought a sweet camera there, Canon IXUS 860is. But it has alot of stuff and is two floors, so I could spend hours there if I had time.

I aslo saw a Ferrari for the first time while we were going to the Media Markt, and I found that cars like that and Porsche and common here, much like Mustang or Corvette in USA.

The Families here are also very kind and caring, and not as much like in USA. They are always nice, with no fighting. I have never herd a yell, and even when we were talking up the whole sidewalk the guy coming the other ways in the kindest and most upbeat way said "Give me some space, Assholes!" as if we had known him forever.

but I have school in the moring. I plan to get some pictures up as soon as I can! Good Night

Arrived

So I arrived in Hamburg to my host brother, Lennart, and my host mother, Edith, whom gave me a hug and some Germany candy.

My first car ride in Germany was pretty crazy, Lennary, was driving and he drove very fast, 180kph, 112mph, on the autobahn, but Edith would not let him go faster becuase he is a new driver, only 17 and cannot drive without a parent.

I am living in their two storie house on the outside of a small village. My host father Gerhard speaks no english, and also my host grandma who im 88.

My host gma is noisy so my host mother said i should lock my room every time i leave so she dosent go in and have a look at my things.

my host mother is very kind and speaks pretty good english. she is the kindest person i know.

my host brother lennart is also very cool, we went to the pub togher and meet one of his friends there to play some pool and cards. I drank some German beer there too.

Washington DC

For thee days the group was in Washington DC for some orientation there. We spent much time with each other, and having meetings about things that will come in contact with while in Germany. We also took a tour of Washington DC to see the area and meet with senators, I meet senator Luger, whom helped start the CBYX program.

Then we had an 8 hour flight to Germany, very long and boring, and then a 1 hour flight to Hamburg.
